The Tuscarora Nation is an Indian tribe, the men of which share the toils of their women in a greater degree than any other. The Governor mentioned a project, he has conceived, of giving a half civili- zation to all the Indian nations in the interest of England. Whether or no civilization be likely to promote the happiness of the Indians, is a question, a full discussion of which might, perhaps, exceed my powers, or at least seem irrelevant. But, were I obliged to decide it at once, I should answer in the negative, as long as they are not hemmed in too closely by the colonists, possess a sufficient tract of ground for hunting, and have plenty of game. But, I repeat it once [448] more, to do justice to this question would require a more profound discussion, than I can enter upon in this place. prev     next
